A Major Catastrophe
Bangladesh has not seen such floods in its history, water has flooded local areas through heavy rains and breaches in the flood control, causing widespread inundation. With the worsening flood situation, a staggering 5 million victims have been affected and have been suffering immensely without electricity. The flood has affected at least 18 percent of total land area in Bangladesh or 26,000 square kilometres, and the situation is getting worse.
Due to the disruption of all communication links, flood-affected victims are experiencing severe hardship. It has been reported that floodwaters have damaged power lines, leading to widespread power outages in most areas of the Parshuram, Fulgazi, and Chhagalnaiya Upazilas.
Additionally, heavy rains have caused waterlogging in Feni district town, resulting in floodwaters submerging all houses and buildings in the entire area. Due to the intense current, rescue efforts are being hampered.
It is considered that in the next 72 hours we are going to witness the most devastating floods in the history of Bangladesh. At the moment, the water level of Kaptai Lake is at 104 feet. Water is increasing by 30 points per hour. Farakka Barrage dam may be forced to open by the Indian government within the next 2-3 days, if opened, Kaptai, Rangunia, Raozan, Gahira and Chittagong will be fully submerged.
How We Will Respond?
We are sending a UK deployment leaving on Thursday 12th September 2024 to plan, pack and distribute 500 food packs (approx. 3,000 beneficiaries) to potentially save lives. The goal of the project is to support victims with emergency food assistance. The location of this project will be Feni municipally, an area of Feni district of Bangladesh. The majority of this population are suffering from food insecurity and some are facing malnutrition.
We aim to distribute food containing:
- Rice
- Sugar
- Wheat Flour
- Cooking Oil (Soybean)
- Noodles
- Dried Beans, Peas and Lentils
- Potatoes
- Water Purification Tablets
- Salt
Each food pack will cost £10.95
To achieve our objectives, the plan will be with the assistance of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Coast Guards, because the communication system has completely collapsed and almost all the area has been submerged with flood water. The duration will be over 5 days.
